Communications Division

The Communications Division is comprised of twenty-one full time deputies, two part time officers, four Sergeants, and one Lieutenant.
The Deputies of the Communications Division are responsible for answering 9-1-1 and non-emergency calls. These calls are deciphered through for dispatch or are forwarded to other agencies. We also gather information that may be given to administration, public works, other departments in the county, railroads, etc. Providing the proper service over the telephone completes many of the calls we receive. In 2007, we had approximately 94,000 calls for service.
Our Communications Center dispatches nine police agencies and thirteen fire departments within the county. This includes all towns and cities in the county with the exception of DeKalb, Sandwich and Northern Illinois University. We are also the primary dispatch center for MABAS Division 6 and handle all major fire and ambulance events. Unlike many other Sheriff’s Offices we also maintain all county warrants, orders of protection, sex offender registry, gang files, and other officer safety information. The communications center is the “hub” of the Sheriff’s Office, often filled with a buzz from multiple situations occurring at one time.
It has been said that dispatchers are able to multitask like no other. This ability is developed from the need to talk, listen, and type all at the same time. We take pride in this skill that allows us to get the proper personnel to the scene as soon as possible. In order to do this, we build strong relationships with our fellow deputies in order to anticipate their needs. Good dispatchers are already prepared before a request or need arises. We are trained first responders and we save lives each and every day.
