Corrections Division

The Corrections Division is home to twenty-two full time deputies, one part time officer, four sergeants,
and one Lieutenant. Of the twenty-two full time deputies, two are assigned to courthouse security.
One additional deputy is assigned to split their time between courthouse security and the jail.
In addition, two deputies manage our Electronic Home Monitoring (EHM) program.
The Corrections Division is responsible for processing, housing, and all transportation needs of inmates during their stay in the jail. We house individuals that are sentenced to serve time, or are arrested by our deputies, and all other agencies within DeKalb County that are unable to secure bond. In 2007, there were 3,180 inmates booked into the DeKalb County Jail. The jail has a functional capacity of seventy-two.
In 2007, the average daily population was 102 inmates. As of June 2008 that average is 133.
To accommodate the number of inmates that exceed our capacity, we house inmates in surrounding county jail facilities. In 2007, we had taken 303 inmates to other counties for a total of 5,359 days served, costing the county more the $269,000. As the need to house inmates in other counties grows, transports are needed almost daily to accommodate for the court schedules of those inmates. We conducted 611 transports last year which took over 1,730 hours to accomplish. In addition to housing inmates in other counties, we have two programs, work release, and electronic home monitoring, which help alleviate some of the overcrowding. For 2007, there were forty-three inmates on work release, and 156 individuals on EHM.
Transports are done for various reasons. If a person is arrested in another county or state on one of our warrants, it is our responsibility to pick them up so that they may appear before a Judge to answer for the charges filed against them. Additionally transports are done for court writs from other counties, taking inmates to the Department of Corrections, inmate medical needs, and a variety of other reasons.
As mentioned before we have two and a half deputies assigned to courthouse security. They are responsible for maintaining order in the courthouse and make arrests as needed. They respond to any needs at the courthouse that need the attention of a deputy. Last year over 145,000 people entered the courthouse through the court security station. The men and women that make up the Corrections Division of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office face many challenges in the future. However, we maintain a positive outlook, a professional demeanor, and come to work everyday ready to serve the citizens of DeKalb County with pride.
